New amendments to the German Citizenship Law were recently introduced by the Parliament on January 19, 2024. These changes aim to facilitate obtaining dual Citizenship from Germany by modifying the requirements of the program.
What are the new amendments to the German Citizenship Law?
Germany has recently made amendments to its Citizenship law with the aim of facilitating the process of obtaining German citizenship for immigrants.
- Minimum Residency Requirement in Germany:
Immigrants who legally reside in Germany are now eligible to apply for citizenship after just five years, instead of the previous requirement of eight years. In cases where immigrants achieve special accomplishments, this period can be reduced to just three years.

- Automatic Citizenship for Children:
Your child can now obtain German citizenship immediately upon birth, according to the new German Citizenship Law, which grants citizenship to a child born if one of their parents has spent at least 5 years in Germany.
- Oral Language Test for Seniors:
The language test is no longer a barrier for seniors seeking German citizenship, as applicants over the age of 67 can now undergo an oral language test instead of the previously required written test
- Allowance of Dual Citizenship:
The new amendments allow for dual citizenship, a significant turning point for citizens seeking citizenship from outside the European Union. This will allow them to retain their original citizenship and obtain a second passport from Germany simultaneously.
The amendments to the German Citizenship Law aim to enhance social integration and provide the infrastructure for the labor market, thereby increasing demand for German citizenship.
