CARIFTA Games in Grenada 2024

One of the Caribbean islands is preparing to host one of the most significant events of 2024 – the CARIFTA Games in Grenada. This island has been experiencing notable development across various sectors, aiming to enhance tourism and investment through various programs.

CARIFTA Games in Grenada 2024:

Grenada is set to host the CARIFTA Games for 2024 in its 51st edition, coinciding with the island’s 50th independence anniversary. The tournament will take place at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium from March 30th to April 1st. The island’s preparations go beyond improving its sports facilities, involving support from local communities and relevant entities to ensure the event’s success.

It’s worth noting that this will be Grenada’s third time hosting this championship:

  • The first time was in 2000.
  • The second time was in 2016.

History of CARIFTA Games:

In 1972, the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) initiated the CARIFTA Games to boost the region’s economy, open doors for tourism, and encourage investment in the Caribbean areas. This decision coincided with the emergence of CARICOM, replacing the Caribbean Free Trade Association. The tournament became a common ground uniting English-speaking Caribbean nations.

Over the years, the CARIFTA Games evolved into a prestigious event, encompassing a variety of sports and attracting participants from different parts of the world.

Diverse Range of Sports:

CARIFTA Games include a diverse range of sports, reflecting the rich variety of athletic talents in the Caribbean. Track and field events hold a prominent place, featuring disciplines such as sprinting, hurdles, long jump, high jump, and javelin throw. These events serve as an ideal platform for future Olympians, with many CARIFTA Games graduates achieving success on the global stage.

CARIFTA Games also include swimming and cycling competitions. Swimmers from Caribbean countries compete in various swimming styles, showcasing their skills in the water. Simultaneously, cyclists navigate challenging tracks, highlighting the region’s ability to excel in multiple sports.

Protocol of the Games:

This annual tournament gathers participants from countries that are part of the Caribbean Free Trade Association. The CARIFTA Games span three days during the Easter holiday period, featuring over 150 competitions. Each country is allowed to enter 2 to 6 athletes.

Objectives of CARIFTA Games:

CARIFTA Games aim to achieve several important objectives in the Caribbean region. One primary goal is to identify and nurture emerging talent in sports. By providing a competitive platform for young athletes, the Games contribute to the development of future sports stars capable of achieving victories for their countries on the global stage.

In the coming years, these activities will continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of sports and investment in the Caribbean. This event attracts numerous investors, especially from the United Kingdom.
